Massage Tutorial: Myofascial Release for Sciatica (2013 version)

Updated 2016 version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EULz6GWlDwg Please see the annotations for tips and a couple of corrections.
Working with a client with sciatica pain? Consider working globally rather than just focusing in on poor piriformis. Work with the lumbar region and the hamstrings, work with the pelvis as a whole, and then focus in a bit. As you do, avoid spasm and intense pain (sciatica sufferers have enough of this) and start with the least invasive measures available to you.

Piriformis syndrome symptoms

Piriformis syndrome. The initial symptom of piriformis syndrome is pain in the thigh. Due to the fact that the piriformis muscle is a high tone, there is growing tension between the tendon and bone, causing discomfort and pain in the hip joint. Sometimes the piriformis syndrome associated himself with bunions.

The second symptom of piriformis syndrome is pain in the buttocks. Although not as common, this pain irradiiruet in the stomach.

The third symptom of piriformis syndrome is pain spreading from the buttocks to the back of the leg to the ankle. The localization of pain is that the sciatic nerve runs right through the body of the piriformis muscle and the muscle stenosis is being pinched. This State should be differentiated from sciatica and lumbosacral radiculitis.

Piriformis syndrome treatment

The first thing to do is to relax the "peretružennoj" of the muscle. The best little lie down, taking a position in which the muscle is rasslablenna-this will improve the blood flow to it and speed up its recovery.

Massage for piriformis syndrome

A few massages a day also will contribute to relaxation and an increased blood flow to the muscles. If the massage is done, you can just rub the area in the vicinity of the piriformis muscle.
